USS POWER DD839 You are hereby commended for your participation in the most successful People-to-People project undertaken by the USS POWER(DD 839) during a routine visit to Athens., Greece in October 1963, while assigned to the U. S. Sixth Fleet. This ambitious volunteer project, undertaken by thirty officers and men of this command, consisted of renovating a two room school house serving 150 students, in the mountain village of PHYLI, twenty miles from Athens. During a four day period you and your shipmates performed, a major renovation of the school including repairs to the building., painting the interior, refinishing all the desk, installing new plumbing, renewing the heating system and replacing numerous Window panes, The reaction by the villagers of PHYLI was one of spontaneous friendship and hospitality. Notice of this splendid project also reached the newspaper and officials in Athens. It is considered that "PROJECT PHYLI" was an outstanding success which greatly aided in building amicable relations with one of our most important allies in the Free World. Your willing participation and unselfish spirit made this tremendous project possible. It is with great pride in you and pleasure that I say to you here before the entire ships company assembled. "WELL DONE".
