Charles Raymond (Buster) Brewer Jr. of Starkey, New York passed away January 8th, 2008 at the age of 87. Buster was a lifelong resident of Starkey, born September 11, 1920 to Charles Raymond and Edith Marshall Brewer. He attended and graduated from the first class of Dundee Central School in 1938 and attended Asbury College in Kentucky, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology. After graduating college, he enlisted in the United States Navy, trained at Sampson Naval Base on Seneca Lake and served in the South Pacific during WWII in CUB 16 in the Philippines, later aboard the newly commissioned (plank owner) USS Power as a Yeoman C2 radio operator and Quad 40 gunner. With an honorable discharge from the Navy after the war he returned to Starkey to work as a third generation Postmaster for 19 years. Then as a farmer in partnership with his mother Edith, and then in general construction as a carpenter, electrician and plumber, for Starkey Point Campsites and finally with George L. Davis Construction of Lakemont, NY. After retiring from construction, Buster dedicated his time with his wife Marian volunteering at the Bath V.A. Nursing Home helping fellow veterans on outings and movie programs. This short article can in no way impart the breadth of his life and the many people he touched and imparted his wisdom (YFR) during his time in the Starkey and Finger Lakes area. Buster is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Edith Brewer of Starkey, his sisters, Rosalee Brewer, Ellen Brewer and brother George Brewer. Surviving are a sister, Janice B Foster of Sunsbury, CT, wife Marian J. Brewer of Clifton Springs, NY, daughter Virginia B.Trenchard of Williamson, NY, sons Charles Raymond Brewer III of Farmington, NY, Harry George Brewer of Honeoye, NY and Robert Eugene Brewer of Ontario, NY. Also surviving are several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the Family asks for donations to the Dundee Fire Department to allow them to continue their tireless work to assist and keep the residents of the Dundee area safe. There will be no calling hours, a memorial service will be planned later in the Spring.
For clarification, the photograph above was not taken in the Med. The photo was taken by a newspaper reporter when the USS Power docked for Navy Day in Mobile, Alabama. Dad was both the Radio Operator and the ship’s photographer, so it was his responsibility to keep track of photos and releases at that time. Somewhere in his memorabilia we have the negative of that photo, which has been hanging proudly on his wall for the past 62 years. The reporter checked in with Dad to offer copies of the photo and the negative once the ship docked, and asked for Navy clearance to run the photo in the local newspaper as the lead article for the next day. I also have that article. Thanks for the great website!! Ray Brewer.
